About

Calgary Basketball Academy (CBA)

Calgary Basketball Academy (CBA) was established in August 2010 with an initial group of 20 athletes. Since its inception, CBA has grown into one of the largest boys’ and girls’ basketball clubs in Western Canada. CBA is committed to the advancement of youth basketball in Calgary and to the delivery of high-quality, athlete-centred programming aligned with the principles of Basketball Alberta and Canada Basketball.

CBA provides a structured and supportive environment that emphasizes discipline, accountability, and respect. Our objective is to support the long-term development of athletes both on and off the court. Programming is delivered year-round and includes Fall and Winter skill development sessions, as well as Spring and Summer club team competition aligned with provincial and national competitive calendars.

Athlete Pathway & Club Culture

Calgary Basketball Academy operates within an athlete development pathway consistent with Canada Basketball’s Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) framework. CBA serves athletes from U11 through U17, including middle school and high school-aged players, providing developmentally appropriate training and competitive opportunities at each stage.

CBA promotes a strong club culture built on inclusivity, collaboration, and mentorship. While teams are organized by age and skill level, CBA functions as one unified club. Older athletes are encouraged to model leadership and support younger players, reinforcing a positive, club-wide learning environment.

CBA offers both Development and Performance (Elite) streams, recognizing that athletes progress at different rates. Athlete experience ranges from introductory skill acquisition to high-performance athletes participating in provincial and national identification programs, including Team Alberta.

Training plans are informed by an understanding of age, growth, maturation, and gender-specific considerations. Coaches design practices that appropriately balance skill development, intensity, competition, and recovery in accordance with safe sport and LTAD best practices.

Competitive Development Philosophy

CBA recognizes club basketball as a competitive environment designed to challenge and develop athletes aspiring to higher levels of play. At the same time, we believe strongly in providing equitable opportunities for athlete progression.

Athletes are evaluated annually and provided opportunities to earn placement on club teams based on commitment, skill development, coachability, and readiness. Wherever possible, athletes train and compete at appropriate competitive levels to maximize confidence, learning, and long-term retention in sport.

CBA evaluates success through athlete development outcomes rather than win-loss records. Growth in basketball IQ, technical skills, decision-making, confidence, and leadership are key measures of progress.

Provincial & Community Alignment

Calgary Basketball Academy is a proud supporter of Basketball Alberta and actively encourages athletes to participate in provincial identification processes and tryouts. CBA works collaboratively with Basketball Alberta to support dual participation where feasible, in alignment with provincial guidelines.

CBA also maintains a strong partnership with the Calgary Minor Basketball Association (CMBA), ensuring programming alignment and supporting athletes’ ability to participate in both community-based and club basketball environments.

Coaching & Leadership

CBA coaches are committed to continuous learning and athlete-centred coaching practices. Members of the coaching staff are actively involved with Basketball Alberta, CMBA, Calgary High School Athletics, and post-secondary programs, including Mount Royal University.

This collaborative approach ensures coaches remain connected to current coaching methodologies, competition standards, and athlete pathway expectations within the provincial and national basketball landscape.

Mission Statement

Calgary Basketball Academy is committed to leading, developing, and promoting positive basketball experiences. We strive to support athlete development through sportsmanship, teamwork, accountability, and responsibility.

Training Philosophy

CBA emphasizes technical, tactical, physical, and mental skill development in alignment with Canada Basketball’s athlete development principles. The foundation of all programming is the mastery of fundamental basketball skills, decision-making, and game understanding.

Athletes are taught all positions on the floor to support long-term versatility and basketball IQ. Training sessions also include education on expectations within school, community, and club basketball settings, supporting a seamless transition across competition environments.

Mental skills training, including confidence, focus, resilience, and leadership, is integrated into programming to support holistic athlete development.

Club Team Philosophy

Athletes selected to represent Calgary Basketball Academy commit to their teammates, coaches, families, and the club. In return, CBA commits to providing a safe, supportive, and competitive environment that enables athletes to perform to the best of their ability.

Each CBA team strives to compete with purpose, professionalism, and respect, while prioritizing long-term athlete development and positive representation of the club within the basketball community.
