Safe Sport

Calgary Basketball Academy is deeply committed to upholding the highest standards of safety and respect in sport, ensuring a positive and inclusive environment for all athletes. As part of this commitment, we fully support **Canada’s Safe Sport** initiative, which promotes athlete well-being, ethical behavior, and the prevention of harassment, abuse, and discrimination in sports. By aligning with the principles of Safe Sport, we prioritize the physical and emotional safety of our athletes, ensuring that every participant, regardless of age, skill level, or background, can thrive in a respectful and nurturing environment.

All of our coaches have completed the **Safe Sport Training** program offered by **Coach.ca**, an essential step in reinforcing our dedication to safety and ethics. This comprehensive training equips coaches with the tools and knowledge to recognize, respond to, and prevent maltreatment in sport. Topics covered include understanding appropriate behavior, identifying signs of abuse, and fostering a culture of inclusion and respect. By having all coaches complete this training, Calgary Basketball Academy ensures that its staff is prepared to handle any potential issues, while promoting a positive, supportive environment for athletes at every level.

Moreover, Safe Sport Training encourages the development of leadership skills that are centered on athlete well-being. By maintaining high ethical standards and promoting the values of fairness and respect, our coaches are not only guiding athletes in their athletic development but also helping them grow as individuals. Through this training, our coaches foster trust, open communication, and mutual respect between athletes, coaches, and parents—values that are essential for long-term success and athlete retention.

At Calgary Basketball Academy, we believe that education and proactive measures are the best ways to ensure the well-being of our athletes. By adhering to the Safe Sport guidelines and requiring our coaches to be trained in this vital area, we take every step necessary to create a safe and empowering environment for all. Our ongoing commitment to this initiative reflects our dedication to the highest standards of care and respect in Canadian sports.

What does abuse-free Sport Helpline do…

The role they have been given by Sport Canada is very clear: working with federally-funded sport organizations to address alleged violations of the UCCMS and working with allies at all levels to influence a positive shift in Canada’s sport culture.

Prevention

Preventing abuse in sport is our primary focus.

They are collaborating with experts in sport and a variety of related fields (e.g., law, human rights, psychology) to accredit training and education programs that will meet strict criteria and will be compliant with the UCCMS. They also promote peer-reviewed research that contributes to our knowledge of safe sport and can help to improve the culture of sport in Canada.
